  • Elval provides the aluminium for the pioneering catamaran Margarita Salas

Thanks to its partnership with the Astilleros Armon Shipyard in Gijón, Spain, ElvalHalcor’s Aluminium Rolling Division (Elval), was part of a remarkable project that paves the way for a sustainable future in the shipping industry. The company provided the aluminium for Margarita Salas, an LNG-powered, high-speed catamaran that was recently unveiled by Baleària. It is the eleventh Balearia ship to be equipped with dual gas engines. Named after the educator and pioneering molecular biology scientist, the ship combines the most competitive features of its predecessor, the world’slongest dual gas engines fast ferry, theEleanor Roosevelt, with a series of innovations in design and engineering. The ship will commence operations in the summer.

This collaboration marks a milestone in the 50 years of Elval’s expertise in tailor-made, flat-rolled aluminium. Babis Chaikos, Elval’s commercial senior director, said: "The company is honoured to have been selected as the aluminium supplier for this state-of-the-art vessel.
