According to a study by the International Copper Association, a 143% rise in the volume of copper used in car components is expected by 2040, compared to 2020. The reason behind this increase is the significantly higher amount of copper used in electric and autonomous vehicles compared to the internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. This new generation of vehicles requires more high-voltage connectors and wiring, and copper provides excellent electrical conductivity and thermal performance for these purposes.
In addition to the practicality of the application of copper in this respect, new sustainability regulations have had their say in the trends for transition towards Hybrid and Electric vehicles (EV). Among these are battery and charging efficiency and strengthened safety standards, along with the reduction of carbon emissions, which make copper connectors the product of choice in the automotive segment due to the characteristics and the recyclable and sustainable nature of the material.
