As a member of The Global Beverage Can Circularity Alliance (GBCCA), ElvalHalcor’s Aluminium Rolling Division participated in the launch of the Alliance’s global advocacy plan, held September 22-29, 2024, in New York, during this year’s Climate Week NYC. To support CBCCA’s vision and mission to achieve full circularity of the aluminium can by 2050, Roland Berger developed a plan that identifies actions, investments and policies based on domestic can usage, waste management systems and socio-economic factors in 140 countries. It also highlights countries where brand owners, retailers, governments and other stakeholders are most likely to support the use of deposit return systems (DRS) to to improve recycling rates and support can-to can circularity.
The overall strategy of the Alliance includes designing and deploying advocacy efforts focused on international diplomacy, supporting companies in identifying recycling infrastructure investment opportunities, driving better data collection, setting targets for recycling, and implementation of smart policies, as well as providing global support to countries considering DRS, extended producer responsibility, or other policies. Established following COP28 and supported by the International Aluminium Institute, the Aluminum Association and the Can Manufacturers Institute, the Global Beverage Can Circularity Alliance consists of Ardagh Metal Packaging, Ball Corporation, Canpack Group, Constellium, Crown Holdings, Elval, Emirates Global Aluminium, Novelis, Speira and UACJ.
The aluminium rolling division’s Sustainability Senior Manager Panagiotis Tserolas participated in the event and presented Elval’s perspective on the challenges and opportunities in increasing global recycling rates, as well as the circularity potential that can be unleashed with robust collection and recycling schemes. «Our common decarbonization targets and sustainability ambitions need multi-stakeholder collaborations and decisive actions towards circularity. All companies of the Alliance invest in infrastructure, new technologies, improved product design and best practices; however, we can’t afford to lose a single used beverage can to landfill and thus collection and recycling is a foundational matter across the whole the value chain». Alongside its engagement in various initiatives, multi-stakeholder actions and industry working groups, the aluminium rolling division of ElvalHalcor participates in GBCCA to support global efforts to unlock the circular potential of aluminium beverage cans and prove that collaborative action can make a powerful global impact for long-term sustainability and economic success. By collaborating with key industry players, the company is committed to drive change, advance recycling systems, and invest in a future where 100% can-to-can recycling is a reality. The Alliance will expand its advocacy efforts in the coming years, with a target to achieve 80% global recycling rates by 2030 and 100% by 2050.
