ElvalHalcor’s aluminium rolling division (Elval) joined the First Movers Coalition (FMC) in July, sending a strong market demand signal to the emerging technologies essential to accelerate the decarbonisation of the aluminium sector. Hosted by the World Economic Forum, the FMC is a global coalition of companies leveraging demand to scale the innovative, low-carbon technologies needed to decarbonise the world’s heavy-emitting sectors – including aluminium, aviation, cement and concrete, steel, shipping and trucking.
From 35 members when FMC was launched at COP26, the coalition has now reached almost 100 members and includes some of the world’s largest companies. Members of the First Movers Coalition include, among others: The Coca Cola Company, Apple, Airbus, Google, Volvo Cars, Inc., Novelis, Constellium, Speira, Ball Corporation and Norsk Hydro ASA.
Elval and the fellow FMC members committed to sending a clear message of demand for low-carbon products and services that support global climate targets. By 2030, these commitments will represent an annual demand of $16 billion for low-carbon products and services and 31 million tons (Mt) CO2eq in annual emission reductions. As a new member of FMC, Elval has pledged that by 2030 at least 10% of its annual primary aluminium purchases will be low-carbon, calculated at ~3 tons of CO2 per ton of aluminium –80% less CO2 emissions than the global industry average. This pledge reaffirms Elval’s pathway of decisive actions to reduce its overall carbon footprint by 2030, and to its roadmap to reach net zero by 2050.
“Collaborative efforts across the aluminium value chain are crucial for the successful decarbonisation of the sector,” said Babis Chaikos, Elval’s commercial senior director. “Robust climate action through low-carbon and innovative technologies is a vital step for the aluminium industry’s pathway towards net-zero.” Rob van Riet, interim head of the First Movers Coalition at the World Economic Forum, said that Elval is a “strong addition to FMC’s aluminium sector.” He added, “We look forward to leveraging Elval’s expertise in the aluminium value chain and their aluminium demand to accelerate the deployment of decarbonised solutions for the sector.”
