Elval joins World Economic Forum's First Movers Coalition, rolling towards decarbonization

Elval, the aluminium rolling division of ElvalHalcor SA, joins the First Movers Coalition (FMC), to send a strong market demand signal for the emerging technologies essential to accelerate the decarbonization of the aluminium sector.

Hosted by the World Economic Forum, the FMC is a global coalition of companies using the power of demand to scale the innovative, low-carbon technologies needed to decarbonize the world’s heavy-emitting sectors – including aluminium, aviation, cement and concrete, steel, shipping and trucking.

Elval and almost 100 fellow FMC members have committed to sending a clear message of demand for low-carbon products and services that support global climate targets. By 2030, these commitments will represent an annual demand of $16 billion for low-carbon products and services and 31 million tons (Mt) CO2eq in annual emission reductions.

As a newly established member of FMC, Elval has pledged that, by 2030, at least 10% of its annual primary aluminium purchases will be low carbon, calculated at 3 tons of CO2 per ton of aluminium with 80% less CO2  emissions than the global industry average. This pledge reaffirms Elval’s pathway of decisive actions to reduce its overall carbon footprint by 2030 and its roadmap to net-zero by 2050.

“Elval is proud to join the First Movers Coalition. Collaborative efforts across the aluminium value chain are vital for the successful decarbonization of the sector. Robust climate action through low-carbon and innovative technologies is a vital step for the aluminium industry’s pathway towards net-zero,” stated Babis Chaikos, Elval’s Commercial Senior Director.

“We are very pleased to welcome Elval to our membership, Elval is a strong addition to FMC’s aluminium sector,” said Rob van Riet, Interim Head of the First Movers Coalition at the World Economic Forum. “We look forward to leveraging Elval’s expertise in the aluminium value chain and their aluminium demand to accelerate the deployment of decarbonized solutions for the sector.”
